Disposable microfiber mops vs. reusable microfiber mops: 6 considerations when choosing

July 11, 2024
With the recent rise of microfiber products, many businesses are switching to Microfiber Mops. Compared to traditional wet mops, superfiber mops offer greater cleaning power and more effective bacteria removal. Microfibers can reduce bacteria by 99 percent, while traditional tools, such as mops, only reduce bacteria by 30 percent.
There are two types of microfiber mops:

Reusable (sometimes called washable)
disposable
Both can provide the efficiency that your business depends on for your business goals.

Here we take a look at 6 factors to consider when choosing a single-use and reusable microfiber mop to help you choose the best facility for you:

1. Cost
2. Maintenance
3. Durability
4. Cleaning power
5. Productivity
6. Sustainability
1. Cost
Reusable
Reusable microfiber mops will have a higher initial price per unit, but the unit cost for each mop will soften and become lower as more mops are reused.

Reuse of these mops is subject to proper washing procedures. If you do not use the correct washing procedure and damage the mop, it needs to be replaced before its expected service life is met. Mops that are not used for their maximum life can end up costing the facility at replacement costs.

Disposable
Disposable mops cost less when first purchased, but they are also disposable products.
The energy, chemicals, water and labor used in a reusable washing process are not factors in a Disposable Mop.

When considering a disposable mop, the cost associated with disposal with a mop is lower than the cost associated with washing a reusable mop.
2. Maintenance
reusable
Reusable microfiber mops require more maintenance than disposable microfiber mops.

Specific washing conditions
Reusable microfiber mops are fragile and can easily be damaged if not cleaned under the right conditions.

Microfibers are easily destroyed by heat, certain chemicals, and too much agitation. Most washing procedures are inappropriate and destroy the cleaning ability of the mop because it breaks down microfibers.

A mop that is washed too hard will be damaged, but a mop that is washed too lightly will not remove all bacteria. Both of these conditions will reduce the cleaning effectiveness of the mop.

If improperly or inadequately washed, wash mop cans trap hair, fibers, soap and other contaminants and redeposit materials during your next cleaning process.

disposable
Disposable mops are new to the factory and do not require any maintenance before and after each use. They are disposable products (they must be disposed of after each use
3. Durability
reusable
Reusable microfiber mops add strength and durability compared to disposable microfiber mops and can be used on uneven surfaces such as grouted or non-slip floors.

disposable
Because they are single-use products, each new mop provides consistent cleaning capabilities through its recommended cleaning area. If the area you are cleaning is large, make sure you know the maximum recommended area before replacing the disposable mop.

Disposable mops can be damaged when used on grout or rough surfaces. They are more likely to have rough edges and lose integrity barriers compared to reusable microfiber mops.4. Cleaning power
reusable
Reduce cleaning efficiency
Microfiber mops can absorb up to six times the weight in the case of water and oil-based soil, making them a very effective cleaning tool when removing dirt from the ground. This same property can lead to reduced efficacy of microfiber mops that are reused.

If you use disinfectants, this buildup can lead to the combination of disinfectants, neutralizing the chemicals before it is able to properly sterilize your floor. The less properly a mop is maintained, the more soil and bacterial buildup it experiences, and the less functional they become.

Increased risk of cross-contamination
Reusable mops may increase the risk of cross-contamination.

disposable
Unlike reusable mops, disposable microfiber mops are single-use products that do not create any dirt or chemical residue from previous cleaning processes.

Depending on the thickness of the cleaning section, the disposable mop will have the recommended amount of square feet that can be cleaned before being replaced. If you are cleaning a large area, you may need to use more than one mop to ensure that the area is properly cleaned
